As 35,000 marathon runners pounded the streets of London two Evesham rowers embarked on a different kind of marathon - all in aid of Evesham Rowing Club’s boat fund.
At 11am last Sunday Mark Whyman and Tom Walker sat down at their rowing machines in Abbery Park to pull 26 miles while onlookers and passers-by cheered them on.
Tom Walker, the current Junior 16 British Indoor Rowing champion, was aiming to beat the record of two hours 52 minutes for his age group. He succeeded with a time of two hours 48.30 minutes - a split time of 2.00.5 per 500 metres. Mark Whyman, rowed the distance in an impressive two hours 37.29 minutes. His split time was 1.52 minutes per 500 metres.
Sponsors of the event pledged nearly £1,000 for new junior boats at the club.
