Lifters weigh in medals

Evesham Rowing Club sent seven lifters to the first weightlifting competition of the year at Bristol last week and came away with some very impressive results.
Entering their first competition ever were novices Kirsty Merchant, Sara Howe, Chloe Farrar and Sophie Small. All of them lifted extremely well and all received medals for their efforts
All four also row for Evesham and use the weight training as part of the rowing strength conditioning programme.
The other lifters were Kate Wilkinson, Debbie Turner and Aaron Halford who had previously lifted at last year’s Midland Championships. All three also gained medals at Bristol.
Special mention must go to Kate Wilkinson who represented Evesham Rowing Club at the English Senior Championships at Warley on Saturday when she came away with a bronze medal.
Wilkinson, who is still a junior under-18 lifter, came up against stiff opposition in her first senior competition.
Gold and silver went to current Great Britain internationals, with gold going to Jo Salvastino who earlier this year finished fourth at the Common-wealth Games.
The Vale girl is some eight years younger than her rivals and her efforts augured well for her senior career.
