Evesham Rowing Club’s Ali Gregory has qualified to compete at Henley Royal Regatta - the world’s most prestigious rowing event which takes place this week. Ali is taking part in the Fawley Challenge Cup as part of a coxless quad with three rowers from Reading Rowing Club.

To get to Henley Ali and his crew took part in qualifying races held last Friday. There were 28 junior men’s crews vying for just eight places decided on fastest times over the Henley course. Sixteen crews in the Fawley Cup had already qualified by winning at qualifying events in the last few weeks.

After qualifying for Henley Ali and his crew spent all last weekend training on the 1 mile 550 yard (2,112 metre) Henley course. His first race is Thursday when he meets a crew from Tideway Scullers. ‘If we make the final that would be brilliant,’ says Ali. ‘But just to row at Henley is a fantastic experience and we’re aiming to get through two or three rounds.’
