Gloucester & Ross Regattas

Congratulations are pouring in from top club officials and ARA representatives after Evesham juniors put on some stunning performances at the Gloucester and Ross Regattas over the bank holiday weekend.

Their efforts paid off when they were awarded the prize of a brand new Swift Racing boat for the club whose juniors notched up the highest points total over the weekend.

The prize was offered as an incentive to boost entries at the Regattas and it worked, with a record 300+ crews wanting to row in the hotly-contested races. Juniors were awarded one point for a semi-final place, three if they reached the final and six if they won the event. On Saturday evening Evesham were slightly ahead of the other strong junior contingents but by close of racing on Sunday evening the Evesham rowers were an unbeatable 80 points ahead of the competition.

Jo Atkinson, the ARA CDO for the West Midlands, offered her congratulations saying: ‘Well done to you all - a just result for all the hard work all the coaches and athletes have put in with the junior section over the past years.’

Club captain Nigel Emes said: ‘Evesham was the best club at the jointly organised event, winning the competition for the boat by 80 points from their nearest rival. Congratulations to all the rowers and coaches involved.’

‘This tastes pretty sweet,’ said Mark Dewdney, club vice-chairman. ‘I can only guess what the other clubs that sent high numbers of entries thought!’

Club chairman, John Lomas, added: ‘Having seen the single scull proudly displayed in the Boathouse, can I please add to Nigel’s and Mark’s comments and pass on my own, and the Club’s congratulations to one and all – Well Done.’

The reward of a new sculling boat comes at the close of a very successful regatta season for Evesham Rowing Club. Just a fortnight ago the club won the Victor Ludorum at Stourport Regatta, collecting a £250 cash prize, which will be used to fund rowing equipment.

The new boat arrives just in time for Evesham Rowing Club’s grand reopening on Saturday 9th September at which Olympic rower Sir Matthew Pinsent is to formally name the club’s newest boats. On Friday 8th September there is an open evening for anyone interested in joining the club for rowing, squash or tennis.
