Head Brings Glut of Golds

Evesham Rowing Club staged it’s sixth Junior Head of the River last Saturday and attracted a record-breaking 250 crews. The event now attracts more crews than the Senior Head - a sign of how strong junior rowing is in the country.

Home crews notched up ten gold medals and broke three course records. The J15 girls’ coxed quad of Lucy Palmer, Colleen Penrose, Ruth Whyman, Chloe Bryan and cox Zoe Thomas shaved 30 seconds off the course record to claim the gold medal in eight minutes and 28 seconds over the 1,900m course.

Record Breaking

The boys’ J13 coxed quad of Andre Roberts, Robert Bonham, Eddie Surman, Lewis Giles and John Rowland clocked a record breaking 6.14 to win gold over the shorter 1,400m course. While at J16 level, the coxed quad of Rory Sullivan, Will Tew, Daniel Middleton and Ben Farrar, coxed by Lawrence Sullivan, won gold in 7,41 minutes - another course record - over the longer distance.

There were also J16 wins for the coxless quad of Huw Davies, Declan Clarke, Matthew Murphy and Dan Barnes (8.03), while Davies then paired up with Tom Parry to win gold (9.34) in the J18 pairs.

The club’s junior women claimed two single sculling golds. Abi Penrose rowed the 1,900m in 9.27 to pick up the J16 singles medals. Aimee Rutherford won the J14 event with a 1,900m time of 9.43 - a time that would have placed her first in the WJ15 event and second at WJ16.

There was more success in the boys doubles races as Oliver Staite and Will Tew claimed the J16 doubles title in 7.53. There was a dead heat for second with Rory Sullivan and Josh Pendry and James Crumpton and Daniel Middleton clocking eight minutes dead. There was success elsewhere for the girls’ J12 coxed quad and siler and gold for the boys’ J15 double scullers.
