Evesham’s J16 boys were on top form last weekend winning a hat trick of three gold medals in the Junior Inter-regional Championships at the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham. There were silver medals for two of Evesham’s girl crews, too. Twelve Evesham crews represented the West Midlands in an event that brought together the best rowers from 12 regions around the country.
The J16 coxless quad of Oli Staite, Will Tew, Danny Middleton and Rory Sullivan stormed through to win their final in a time of 5.22.9 minutes, three seconds ahead of a strong crew from the Eastern region.
In the J16 singles event Oli Staite won gold after rowing the final of the 1,500 metre course in a time of 6.22.2 minutes, well ahead of last year’s national champion from the Thames Upper region.
Meanwhile in the J16 double sculls Will Tew and Danny Middleton held on in a tight finish to take the gold with 0.16 seconds to spare (also in a time of 6.22.2 minutes).
There were two silver medals for the junior girls. Ruth Whyman won a silver medal in the WJ15 single sculls event, after an intense battle against a competitor from the North West who wanted it as much as she did! Whyman finished in a time of 7.16.5 minutes with her silver place being decided on the photo-finish.
Abi Penrose and Tash Symonds, who have recently moved to a pair, were delighted to have won the silver in the WJ16 event, rowing the course in a time of 7.20.4.
