Ball Cup report

Evesham junior crews battled horrendous conditions at the World Championship course at Dorney Lake, Eton, in the annual Ball Cup and under-13 junior championships held on Sunday 13th May.
Torrential rain during the middle of the day meant that some events for the young rowers had to be called off. Nevertheless, Evesham managed to bring home a good haul of medals from the event, which is designed for smaller school and town rowing clubs.
Single sculls were the first events of the day. There was a silver medal for Ruth Whyman and a bronze for Lucy Palmer in the WJ15 singles event. Meanwhile Jordan Bunyan also won bronze at J15. There was bronze too, for Eddie Surman rowing at J13 - his first singles medal.
The doubles events were badly hit by the weather. With very heavy rain and wind many competitors were drenched before they had even started to race. Robert Bonham and Andre Roberts battled through the harsh conditions to pick up a bronze medal, while at WJ15 the duo of Chloe Bryan and Helen Stirrup also rowed to a bronze medal position.
Stirrup and Bryan also competed in the WJ15 quad alongside Coleen Penrose and Lucy Palmer (cox: Jack Lazenby). The crew made their win look very easy and were delighted to win gold.
Another quad also picked up a medal. The J14 boys crew of Lawrence Sullivan, Dominic Murphy, Jack Lazenby and Andrew Uncles (cox: Jamie Sellick) fought off a competitive field to win silver in the coxed quad event.
Unfortunately the junior 13 boys and girls quads missed out on the chance of a medal as their events were cancelled because of the weather.
