A hard winter’s training has paid off for Evesham Rowing Clubs men’s squad with three wins at Monmouth Regatta on Saturday 26th May.
There was also a win for a junior single sculler from the club. The novice men’s coxed four of Arian Tadjrishi, Paul Hoy, Dave Lynes and Ian Jervis (coxed by Victoria Seymour) fought three tough races to win their event. In the first round against a crew from de Montfort University the Evesham crew were down at the halfway mark on the 750 metre course. The Evesham men put on a push and gained the lead, winning by two lengths. In the next round the Evesham crew got off to a bad start and were down to a crew from Gloucester. They found their rhythm by the 250 metre mark and led for the rest of the race.
In the final round Evesham were pitted against a crew from Ross. With both crews determined to win this event the boats were level for most of the race - giving the crowd plenty to shout about. At the 250 metre mark the Evesham crew were behind. The coxon called for a push at the 500 metre mark and the crews drew level with 250 metres to go. A final push in the last few strokes pushed Evesham ahead and they won by just two feet. The win means the men have lost their novice status and move up to senior 4 category - they will also be awarded their club caps by the captain at the end of season dinner later this year.
Paul Hoy made it a double celebration as he also won the men’s novice single sculls event. Hoy had reached two finals for this event at Evesham Regatta and was determined to pick up his novices at Monmouth. He won his first round against a sculler from Falcon Rowing Club and then met a sculler from Cardiff City in the final. He was behind at the halfway mark but by lengthening his stroke and upping his rate he managed to push through and won by two lengths. Hoy has now moved up to senior 4 status.
There was an easy win for another single sculler. Steven Redgewell won by two lengths in a straight final against a sculler from Cardiff City. Evesham’s J13 single sculler Ed Surman managed to make winning look easy in his two rounds.
