Henley Royal Regatta: Evesham crew qualifies

Evesham Rowing Club is celebrating after four of its junior rowers qualified to row at Henley Royal Regatta this week.
The junior 16 coxless quad crew of Oli Staite, Danny Middleton, Will Tew and Rory Sullivan was one of nine crews selected from a competitive field of 38 contenders for The Fawley Challenge Cup, an event open to crews aged under 19. The boys rowed a very fast time over the 1mile 550 yard course in their qualifying time trial last Friday evening. Fifteen crews had already qualified for the Fawley Cup so the Evesham boys will be trying their luck in a field of 24 top level junior crews, including some from the USA and Australia.
The first race for the Evesham boys is on Thursday 5th July against a crew from Maidenhead. If they win their race they will be pitted against a crew from Surfers Paradise Rowing Club, Australia, on Friday 6th July. Club members will be heading down to Henley en masse to cheer the boys on as it is the first time in many years that a crew made up solely of Evesham members has qualified for Henley.
The J16 coxed four of Ben Farrar, Jon Farrar, James Crumpton and Josh Pendry (cox Jack Lazenby) narrowly missed out on selection in the qualifying round for the Britannia Challenge Cup.
