Nine GB vests for Evesham’s juniors

Nine (YES NINE!) of Evesham’s junior rowers have been selected to represent their country at the annual Anglo-France junior 16 match on Monday 16th July. It is the first time in the club’s history that so many members have been selected for Great Britain in one go. Selection races were held on Tuesday 10th July at the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham. The first Evesham crew to win selection was the coxed four of Ben Farrar, Jon Farrar, James Crumpton and Josh Pendry, cox Jack Lazenby. The crew were involved in a nail-bitingly tense race as they came from behind to beat a crew from Abingdon by a canvas over the 1,500 metre course. They were helped along by a cox who refused to let his crew row anything less than their maximum with cries of ‘MAX’ clearly audible along the course.
Ten minutes later the coxless quad of Oli Staite, Danny Middleton, Will Tew and Rory Sullivan were up for their chance of a GB vest. Only last week this crew had performed creditably at Henley Royal Regatta with a win on the Friday against Maidenhead, followed by a defeat at the hands of a crew of 18-year-old rowers from Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast. This time the J16 boys were out to win and they did so in style - three lengths ahead of a field of crews that included Maidenhead, Borlase and Windsor Boys.
For the girls Abi Penrose and Tash Symonds came third in their pairs race, and then missed out on GB selection when they came second after teaming up with two Maidenhead girls to form a coxless four.
The nine junior boys will travel back to Nottingham on Friday for a three day training camp with the GB coaches followed on Monday 16th July by a race against their counterparts from France.
