Evesham rowers win gold for GB

Evesham’s GB rowers made up one-third of the boys’ J16 squad at the Anglo-France Match in Nottingham this week. The crews selected were the J16 coxless quad of Oli Staite, Danny Middleton, Will Tew and Rory Sullivan and the J16 coxed four of Ben Farrar, Jon Farrar, James Crumpton and Josh Pendry, cox Jack Lazenby.
The boys attended a GB rowing camp at Nottingham over the weekend with the £2,250 cost of the course kindly sponsored by Redditch-based firm UnoMedical. The boys rowed in their Laufen and EnviroMontel sponsored boats.
On Monday, 16th July, the Anglo-France Match was held. First to race was the coxless quad. They faced a very powerful French crew which pushed them hard right from the start. The Evesham boys were first off the start and kept a slight lead all the way. The French crew were determined not to give in and gave the Evesham boys a tough race. In the last 200 metres the Evesham crew put on a push that the French couldn’t match, and they won by a length.
The boys in the four also faced a tough challenge from the French. This time, though, it was the Evesham boys who were under pressure from the start. Cox, Jack Lazenby, called for pushes in all the right places but the French matched each push and went over the line a length ahead of the Evesham boys. While disappointed not to have won, two of the boys - the Farrar brothers - will have another chance at GB J16 next year as they are currently J15 rowers.
The next event for Evesham’s top rowers is the National Championships of Great Britain. The J16 boys will be back in action along with the club’s top rowers in other age groups. Full report next week.
