Golden Mile Report

Evesham’s annual indoor rowing event, The Golden Mile, attracted hundreds of Britain’s top indoor rowers and several keen competitors from the USA.The event which is held at Evesham Rowing Club to coincide with Evesham’s popular River Festival is one of the highlights of the indoor rowing calendar. Those over 14 can compete for the full mile (or 1,609 metres) while younger competitors row as far as they can in a set time.
Once again Jo Lyons from Worcester posted a formidable time in the open women’s event rowing the distance in 5.27.8 minutes, shaving four seconds off the British record. Records also tumbled in the older age categories. Joan Van-Blom took nine seconds off the record for the women’s 50-59 lightweights with a time of 6.02.2, while Christina Nugent-Lee took four-tenths of a second off the record for 40-49 lightweight women. It was clearly an over-50s day for record-breaking men. Brian Bailey took 6.1 seconds off the 60-69 men’s event with a time of 5.32.4 while Roger Bangay came in at 5.45.8 in the over 70s lightweight event, 5.2 seconds faster than the current British record.
There were plenty of medals for Evesham members. Andrew Walker won gold for his time of 4.57.5 in the men’s under 23 event. His brother Tom wasn’t far behind, time-wise, with 5.10 in the under 18 event, good enough for gold.
There was a junior 15 gold medal for Yasmin Tredell who rowed the mile in 6.06.4, which would have given her gold in the J16 and J18 events. Yasmin’s sister Zena picked up gold in the Year 8 three minute event rowing 771 metres. Dani Symonds won the J14 four minute event rowing 974 metres. The year 6 two minute event was won by Patrick Sullivan with a distance of 470 metres. Sadie Bryan rowed 463 in the girls two minute year 6 event and won gold. Tegan Parsons won the year 7 two minute event with a distance of 511 metres. Abi Penrose won the J18 women’s event in a time of 6.11.8.
