Evesham rowers reel in regatta prizes

Rowers of all ages from Evesham competed in Gloucester, Ross Seniors and Juniors and Veterans Regattas.The women’s novice four came tantalisingly close to victory at the Gloucester Regatta at Ross where Tracy Dresch, Stacey Allen, Becci Powell, Amber Grant and cox Abi Penrose reached the semi-final after knocking out a Gloucester crew.
They then dead-heated against another crew from Gloucester and had to re-row and won by just 3 feet after a neck and neck tussle. advertisement
In the final against Hereford, the Evesham women put up a good fight but had to accept defeat.
Danny Middleton (16) rowing the Senior IV singles event won his straight final against Hereford. Fellow 16-year-old Josh Pendry, meanwhile, had a tough round with 11 in his category and he got through three rounds before being knocked out.
The girls’ J15 coxed quad of Coleen Penrose, Chloe Bryan, Helen Stirrup and Ruth Whyman, coxed by Ewan Williams of Llandaff, saw off both Ross and Dart Totnes in the first two rounds then found themselves in the final against Llandaff, which they won with more than two lengths to spare.
Penrose and Bryan also saw action in the WJ15 double winning two rounds before polishing off a Worcester crew in the final.
Ruth Whyman (15) and Tash Symonds (16) both competed in the novice single sculls. They won their heats and found themselves competing against each other in the final which Whyman won.
She has now lost her novice status and will be awarded her novice cap at the club’s end of season dinner later this year.
Abi Penrose won the WJ16 single event winning three heats and a final, while WJ15 single sculler Helen Stirrup also won her event.
The Penrose sisters joined forces with two veterans - Abi with Dave Pollard and Coleen with Rob Wilson to do the mixed fun event at Ross.
The former duo were knocked out in the first round by a Stratford-on-Avon crew but Coleen and Rob won against Warrington.
They then got the better of opponents from Trent with an easy verdict only to lose out to the Stratford crew.
Coleen Penrose and Chloe Bryan carried on where they left off the previous day with a win in the WJ16 doubles event. Stirrup and Whyman also won the WJ15 double.
The J16 double of Pendry and Middleton met strong opposition in the first round against Hollingworth Lake.
Trailing for 600m they managed to give a final push to win by a third of a length assuring to earn a place in the semi-finals which they again won narrowly against Llandaff before disappointingly lost their final The main Regatta at Ross saw juniors and seniors combine again in the women’s Senior IV coxed eight.
Tash Symonds, Helen Trainer, Susie McDougall, Amber Grant, Becci Powell, Stacey Allen, Tracy Dresch, Abi Penrose and cox Coleen Penrose rowed a borrowed boat as the club Eights had been written off in the floods.
And, in a straight final against Gloucester they had a good start but were six seconds adrift at the finish.
The men’s Senior IV crew of Ian Jervis, Arian Tadjrishi, Dave Lynes and Andrew Longdon won one round but lost their second race There was brighter news from the women’s Senior III pair that was won by Abi Penrose and Tash Symonds in a straight final against opposition from Stourport.
