Evesham Scullers out for weekend of medals

Evesham juniors were out in force to win medals at Pangbourne Junior Sculls. Starting off the days medal tables for Evesham were the WJ16 Coxless Quad of Yasmin Tredell, Chloe Bryan, Ruth Whyman and Helen Stirrup, who came cruising through the finish to get Gold in a time of 11 minutes 17 seconds; a full 16 seconds ahead of second place. Next up were the WJ18 Double Scullers Abi Penrose and Tasha Symonds who rowed the 3000m course in 12:39- securing them second place, which bodes well for the 07/08 season.
Olivia Walklett was the next to take to the water in the WJ14 singles event, coming fifth in a promising field of eleven Scullers. The afternoon’s racing schedule was a busy one, starting with Oliver Staite in J18 Singles. Completing the course in 11:34 Staite had to be content with bronze, behind two strong Nottingham Scullers. Jordan Bunyan showed a great deal of promise taking silver in the J16 singles, despite some ‘now fixed’ rigging problems.
There was another medal position for the J14 Quad of Andre Roberts, Robert Bonham, Eddie Surman, Louis Giles, coxed by John Rowland. They came third in a time of 12:03- less than two seconds off second place.
Shortly after, the strongly opposed WJ14 Quad of Julia Davies, Charlotte Pullee, Hayley Pawlowski, Laura Attwood, coxed by Holly Longley, put on a good performance and finished 6th.
WJ14 Double Scullers Natasha Bradley and Zena Tredell, had a fantastic start, and all looked promising. Unfortunately they found themselves in the midst of two boats that had collided just ahead of them. This put the girls behind by a long margin, but they fought back for a credible 6th.
Penrose and Symonds took to the water again, this time separately to race in hotly contested WJ18 Singles. Both girls rowed well and came in the top 20 of a large category. Also well done to Evesham’s S4 sculler Paul Hoy, who secured a well-earned 2nd place at Bristol on Sunday.
A good weekend for Evesham, high hopes have now been set for the rest of the season!
