Yasmin Tredell, age 15, who attends Prince Henry’s High School, was talent spotted by her coaches at the club and put forward for World Class Start, a training programme for the most talented rowers in the country. Yasmin joined Evesham Rowing Club around 18 months ago and last summer won a National Championship bronze medal in the WJ14 single sculls event.
Earlier this year she was assessed by the World Class Start coaches from the Amateur Rowing Association. This involved measurements of height and arm span – girls need to be a minimum of 178cm and with an arm span that is greater than their height – plus a range of endurance tests on indoor rowing and cycling machines as well as strength tests in the weights room. Yasmin passed all the tests with flying colours.
World Class Start was introduced to this country in 2002 with the aim of identifying the best rowers in the country with the potential to row at international level.
Being on World Class Start means that Yasmin will continue her rowing at Evesham, under the guidance of top junior coach Norman Baldwin who has years of experience of coaching junior athletes to national and international level. Yasmin will also attend around nine World Class Start camps a year where she will train with elite young rowers from around the country.
The camps offer a programme of water training, indoor rowing, gym work as well as lectures on nutrition and sports psychology. The aim of the camps is to prepare junior rowers for eventual selection for the GB squad. Evesham Rowing Club would like to wish Yasmin its congratulations for achieving World Class Start selection and looks forward to seeing her compete at national level in the next few years.
