ERC at Gloucester

Several crews headed for Gloucester last weekend with mixed results but some great racing experience for our younger juniors.

Abi Penrose won the J18 singles event but she and Tash Symonds were pipped into second by a very handy combination from Cardiff Uni/Uni of Wales pair.

There was unfortunately no competition for the J13 2x (Alex Russell/Will Taylor) or the J13 1x (Ross McIlldowie) but they didn’t let that stop their winning ways as both boats were awarded medals for setting course records.

The J13 double powered through one of the Gloucester WJ14 quads and continued gaining on them also holding station against the other WJ14 Gloucester Quad. They had a very neat and well timed row looking quite stylish all the way through the 2500m short course. In the second division Ross was pitted against WJ14 2x from Dart-Totnes, and a WJ13 quad and J13
double from Gloucester. He went off last behind the Dart-Totnes crew and at the start was catching them all the way. However this blistering start paid its price and he was not able to pass them and began to regret his enthusiasm towards the later stages. Ross dug deep, hung on and his bravery was rewarded by him setting a course record. Another good day’s work from the
J13s.

The S3 - 4 and Novices had several races with Paul Hoy sculling at both S3 and S4 in his single, and Dave Lynes doing the S4 and Novice singles. Dave was joined by Junior Dan Barnes in the Novice single Sculls with the honours between the two going Dan’s way. Matt Murphy and Tom Leighton had a pleasing row at Novice 2x - hopefully more time together in the boat will see them going from strength to strength.

Finally Dave Pollard and Tony Rowland rowed strongly at Vet D 2x with both of them commenting that it went well but that they were “cream crackered” at the end of it.
