Home Successes in Golden Mile
Posted on July 21, 2008 | Filed under Rowing
DURING Evesham’s River Boat Festival, Evesham Rowing Club played host
to the annual ‘Golden Mile’ - an event which attracts competitors from
across the globe.
Raced on Concept Two indoor rowers, each participant races over 1,609m
- one mile - or in the cases of younger juniors they race for a set time,
trying to row the furthest.
With nearly a year passed since the dramatic floods of July 2007, this
year’s event was a celebration of the event, and just how well the club
has got back on its feet with the help of members and locals alike.
This year’s successes included a gold medal for Jordan Bunyan in men’s
J18 lightweight, a fantastic result for racing up an age group, and a silver
medal for Steve Redgewell in a very competitive men’s open heavyweight
category, beating his personal best by 20 seconds. Jorden Parsons took
silver in the WJ16 event and Abi Penrose won her event, women’s J18
heavyweights.
Evesham dominated the year nine girls event claiming gold, silver and
bronze. Tash Bradley led the 4-minute event, before being pipped to the
post by Zena Tredell who pushed through at the last moment to claim
gold, leaving Bradley with silver and Laura Attwood with bronze in a very
tight race, with only five metres between 1st and 4th.
Sadie Bryan got bronze in women’s year 7, while Ross MacIlldowie won
the same in men’s year 8, covering 815m in 3mins. Team-mate Joe Taylor
came third in men’s year 7.
Year 6 competitors Georgina Walklett and Olivia Attwood came away with
silver and bronze respectively. Lewis Giles had a phenomenal row in
men’s U15, pulling as hard as some of the J18 lightweights for the most
part of his row, to win the gold medal with ease.
