Twins scoop double medal haul

EVESHAM Rowing Club twins Ben and Jon Farrar scooped a double success at last weekend’s British Rowing Championships in Nottingham.

The conditions were good with a slight cross-wind as the siblings claimed the silver medal in OJ16 coxless pairs, coming in well ahead of the bronze medalists.

They then teamed up with two boys from Maidstone Invicta to form the gold medal-winning crew in the OJ16 fours, defeating strong crews from Durham and another Maidstone crew.

Meanwhile, there was a surprised success for Aimee Rutherford in the WJ15 sculls. Having had a winter out with injury, getting into the final was a victory.

Rutherford then went on to have a good start, showing great determination, and the incentive of being bought a new boat made her push even harder, fighting for a medal.

She was battling it out for silver with 1,000m to go. By the 500m marker, it had become a battle for bronze between Rutherford and local rival Camilla Hadland of Stratford BC.

Despite a good fight from Hadland, it was Rutherford’s day for success as she showed a gutsy performance in the last 250m to claim the medal.

There was also bronze medal success for WJ16 single sculler Ruth Whyman who won her heat convincingly, putting her as a favourite to medal in the final which she duely did.
