The annual Wycliffe Small Boats Head took place last Saturday on the Gloucester Sharpness Canal in glorious winter sunshine which created perfect conditions for some fast rowing and the Evesham Junior squads did not disappoint.

In the first division it was the a clean sweep for the early risers with Wil Taylor and Ross McIldowie coming first and second in the Junior 14 event, and Aimee Rutherford first in the women’s junior 16 single sculls in a new record time of beating the previous one set in 2004 by local rivals Gloucester.

The second division saw the women’s J15 quadruple sculls of Liv Walklett, Natasha Bradley, Laura Attwood and Hayley Pawloski coxed by Jasmine Bradley winning gold in their event. As did women’s J14 single sculler Tegan Parsons. She also set a new course record of 11 mins 42.6 secs.

The last division of the day continued in the same vein with two further wins for Evesham; both crews setting new records. One in the women’s J14 doubles - Emily Waters and Tegan Parsons. The other in the Mens J14 quad - Wil Taylor, Ross McIldowie, Jack Steel, Rupert Mallin coxed by Will Caldicott. Rupert and Will were competing in their first ever competition. The Boys beat a record set in 2005 by an Evesham crew. Tash Bradley came a creditable 4th in the Women’s J15 single sculls.

Andre Roberts competed twice in his single scull both in his age group (J15) and in the age above Both events had large entries form a number of rowing schools. He finished in the top half in both events and in the same position (8th); with the J16 result being particularly pleasing.

Four of the older juniors chose to travel to Hampton on the Thames for the Hampton head and both had success winning the J17 and J18 pairs at this high standard event.
