J15 boys silver

Evesham Rowing Club’s Junior 15 coxed quad scooped an unexpected silver medal at British Championships last weekend (13-15 July 2012). The boys raced to third place in their heat on Friday, then put on a magnificent turn of speed to win their repercharge later that day. Based on times from the heats the Evesham crew of Alex Staite, Alex Bartram, James Mackins, Matthew Newman, and coxswain Toby Edwards, would have been placed fourth overall. But they were confident of gaining a medal. In a hotly contested final the boys went into into the last 500 metres of the 2km race in fifth place then put their foot down on the accelerator and launched their attack picking off crews from Claires Court School and a Grange School-Northwich composite to come through in second place just one second behind the winners from Trentham.

In the Junior 4x Evesham Rowing Club had a tough round of heats to end up winning a bronze medal in one of the most competitive finals of the day. As the six crews raced neck-and-neck down the course the Evesham crew of Alex Russell, Liam Tustin, James Waterhouse and Rupert Malein, put in several pushes but didn’t quite manage to get past the crew from Calpe of Gibralter who won the silver medal, behind Marlow in first place.
