Pangbourne & Stourport Heads

Posted on November 17, 2008 | Filed under Rowing

A small group of Evesham Junior rowers travelled competed recently at Pangbourne Junior sculls held on the Thames near Reading , This is one
of the largest junior events of the head season and is always well attended
by both Thames based clubs and many of the top rowing schools, making for fierce opposition . It was a successful trip, with the club coming home with a gold, 3 silvers and 2 bronze.
Oli Staite was in fine form coming back to racing in J18 single sculls after
his successes with the GB squad rowing in Crew boats over the summer. He
stormed down the 2.8Km course, being hard-pressed by a local Pangbourne
sculler but took the top spot by a very close 0.1 sec. He was backed up by fellow GB rower Rory Sullivan who finished in 4th.

The first silver medal came from Will Taylor in the J14 Singles who, but for a steering problem and a time consuming collision with the bank, may well have won
his event. The second from Tegan Parsons in the WJ14 Singles who came in 15 bronze sculler. The third was from Ross McIldowie and Wil Taylor in the
J14 doubles; they were narrowly beaten by Reading by 0.4 seconds.

Ed Surman in the J15 Singles and the WJ15 double of Tash
Bradley and Zena Tredell both provided bronze medals for the club, coming 3rd out of 37 and 12 respectively.
All the Evesham team members finished in the top half of each of their events, with Andre Roberts finishing in the top 10 of 37 athletes in MJ15 single sculls, Lawrence Sullivan putting in a solid performance to come home 23rd out of 53 in a tough field of J16 single scullers, and Olivia Walklett, who came 6th out of 16 in WJ15 singles.

There was also victory for Women’s junior double scullers Abi Penrose and Aimee Rutherford at Stourport Head. They completed the 4.5Km course in an impressive 14.33, coming in just ahead of a Stourport double.
